Bathroom Issues...

luckydevil Mar 23, 2005 06:19 PM

Hi, this is my first time using one of these things....but i need some help. i have a 4 year old Cymric (long haired Manx) who has, for some time now, made it his personal goal to pee on everything i own. first it was the dirty laundry, then the clean laundry, then finally last nite i found a nice coiled pile deposited on my bed, this does not make me happy.....he has been litter box trained, and the problem seems to be very intermittent-i don't know what to do!!! i've started putting him outside during the day....and he waits till he's back in the house to pee on all my stuff-this gets really hard to explain when i have company....outside of the urinary issues, he is the sweetest cat i've ever known, he's very involved with my room mate and i and loves everyone that he meets. any help or suggestions would be great, i'm going to go wash my sheets.....

The cat needs to go to the vet for a check up ASAP. Urinating on soft things often means there is a urinary infection present and he seems to be choosing soft things!

If all is clear on the health front, then the problem is behavioral. If your boyfriend recently moved in with you this could be a possible issue - the cat is marking your things as his! Anyhow, you will need to take steps to retrain the cat to the box. Basically you need to confine the cat to a room like a bathroom, or a large cage with only food, water, bedding and the litterbox. As he begins to use the litterbox consistantly you can expand his space. There is more information at this link:
Litterbox Problems

Cats need easy access to boxes and you may need to put several boxes around the house.Be sure to keep all boxes very, very clean. Scoop at least once a day!

You need to thoroughly deodorize wherever the cat has been peeing. Petastic is highly recommended as is Heaven's Own. It is the smell of the "accidents" that causes a cat to reuse the place.

Check into using Feliway, a spray that mimics the happy scent cats leave when they rub their check against something. You can get it from your vet or from Cat Faeries at http://www.catfaeries.com
If you visit the website, you will see a phone number that you can call and for a fee discuss your cat's problems with someone. The person who does this is very knowlegeable and it may be worth the $$ for you. Feliway is also available in most large pet supply stores. There is also a plug-in with Feliway that can help.

Finally, if all else fails, ask you vet about using an antianxiety medication such as Buspar or Prozac. These very often work, however the decision to prescribe them will rest solely with your veterinarian who will be able to monitor the dosage and side effects.

Thanks for the advice, first, its ROOMMATE ont boyfriend, and the cat has been doing this even when i lived alone. he has been to the vet several times and always comes back with a clean bill of health. however i do like the idea of "re-training" him and will have to give that a try...i'm also going to look into those products you recomended, as i do clean and deodorize all of the affected areas, and he just goes and finds new ones...thank you

Sorry about the misunderstanding. Even a ROOMATE can cause a cat to get "territorial" which may be what is going on. You are taking all the right steps to correct the problem and hopefully it will work itself out!

sorry, don't mean to be snappy. my roommate has been living with me for 4 months noe, and even when i lived alone, the cat was still exhibiting this littel "problem" i am also starting to think that my covered litterboxes may be to....constrictive for an animal of his...um...."girth". does that sound like it may be a possibility? i'm going to try removing one of the lids and placing the box in a more private location. thanks again

-Nate

Hi Nate,
Maybe he is a little to big for the covered boxes. Your idea of removing the lid is a good one. You don't want to move the box to fast. When moving litter boxes it's to move the box a few inches to a foot a day. This way he will know where the box is.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, however if i only move the box a few inches to a foot a day, it will end up right in the middle of my hallway for at least 5 days, i'm having visions for standing in it at 4 am when trying to get to the bathroom. i was just going to put the cat, his box (uncovered), and some food and water in an unused room of my house and see if he gets the idea, because frankly i don't think he knows (or cares) where the box is, he 's not using it anyway....

thanks,
-Nate-

Laughing yeah standing in the litter box at 4am in the morning isn't fun.
I didn't realize you were going to put the cat, box and food/water in a room. That is the best idea. A lot times people don't have a room they can do that with.
Good luck. I hope it works!

Oh one more thing. At least the cat hasn't peed on your head while your sleeping. That happened to me once. I still am not sure what cat did it. I had two orange boys at the time. It was one of them. One of the two was mad at me for putting a box they were playing with away. About a half hr later they got me. Talk about gross. Those cats ended up being outdoor kitties.
