Amitriptyline prescription

AstiLover Jun 29, 2005 12:26 PM

Has anyone had any experience with the drug Amitriptyline? I've given it to my cat ro urine marking/spraying, but the dosage zoned him out. The vet suggested I cut the pill in half and he was still zoned out, so I cut it into quarters and it has not seemed to help with his marking/spraying. If I give him the 1/2 again dose will he eventually not be so zoned out? Will I be able to wean him off of it or will he be on it for life?

Any help is appreciated.

I haven't had any experience with amytriptiline. I would suggest you call your vet with these questions..

I think that it's Elavil which is an antidepressant. I took it for about a year after I lost too many people in a short time period. It's really a milder antidepressent and I don't think that it's prescribed much anymore. I don't think that it's addictive because I just stopped taking it without cutting down or anything.

I wonder why the vet would give an antidepressant to a cat? But I guess that they do because I've heard of them prescribing Prozac for cats and prozac is an antidepressant too.

It's like Buspar that is also prescribed for cats. It's for thier anxiety adn tends to help them stop spraying when they are in a threatening or anxiety-laden situation.

It's seems to be working so far.

Which one are you giving him, Buspar or Elavil? I might have to talk to the vet for something like that for Simba because he just wants to constantly fight with Samantha and KatyKatt and sometimes even Katrina. I wonder if that will calm him down? What do you think?
