Young cat chewing?

fur_momma Jul 19, 2005 07:05 PM

Hello!
I have a shelter kitty, and we are guessing she is about 9 months old. SHe has all her adult teeth, but over the past month, she has started chewing on things... Like wooden figurines or a ceramic dog, or even a plastic lighthouse...

We haven't found her chewing on any chords, thank goodness! Sometimes she enjoys just gnawing on our fingers.

I have checked her teeth, and they are great! She gets kibble for food, with about 1 table spoon of canned each night... in a separate bowl.

Does any one know why she would start this now?

Thanks!

First time for being a kitty momma... have dogs, but never a kitten.

It's hard to say what is going on. The chewing could be a habit that she has aquired to comfort herself or it could be caused by something you are not able to spot on her teeth, or it could be because she lacks some nutrient in her diet (or more likely isn't processing the nutrient correct given what you are feeding her).

I would recommend a vet check. If the problem seems to be behavioral then you could coat all the surfaces you don't want her to chew with a commercial product like "Bitter Apple" or "Bitter End" or with a home-made mixture of cayenne pepper with enough water to make it stick to a surface.

Good luck to you. Let us know what the vet says.

THank you for that advise.

I have coated all of my wires with dawn soap, because that is what worked for my dogs... made them foam at the mouth, and they didn't like it. I hope that won't make Sara sick!

Cayanne pepper seems kinda cruel, but better to be cruel than have her killed by electricity, right?

If she keeps it up, I will take her in when I take my dog for her vaccinations in 2 weeks.

Thanks!

Hopefully the soap will work - I had a cat who loved bath soap, however. Keep an eye on her. I don't think Dawn will make her sick. And anything is better than biting through an electrical cord.

Does she have a lot of toys and do you provide interactive play? She might be chewing just to play.

Oh, my goodness, YES!
We have all kinds of toys! Many of them she has ruined by chewing them... but that I don't worry about. Found out she ate part of our oak door... strange little girl!

Thanks!
