Please help with my cat behavior problem!

kimmyrd Jul 28, 2005 09:13 AM

I have an 8 year old tortoise calico. She is extremely attached to me (and a bit spoiled, I admit). Last night, my husband had a horrible leg cramp which woke him from his sleep -- he was literally screaming from the pain. I think my cat thought he was hurting me -- she jumped up on the bed and bit him. She was very upset and nervous (that he was screaming and obviously in pain).. After he calmed down, she was fine. (Usually she loves my husband). In the future, what can I do to prevent this behavior? thank you for your help.. Kimberly

I don't think there is a whole lot you could do to change the behavior. You might see if your husband would work to desensitize the cat. Have him lie on the bed and jump up suddenly with no noise. Then have him do it several times saying ow softly then gradually louder until it becomes a scream. Watch her and when she seems to be startled, but not alarmed, have him go no louder for that session. Repeat this on a daily basis and hopefully she'll build up tolerance.
