lovable cat gets very mean sometimes help! A bit long sorry

I have a beautiful 3yr long haired black cat. He is very attached to me and is normally very lovable. We rescued him when he was a few weeks old so he has always been with us since bottle feeding. Around 6 months old he broke his leg and became a bit aggressive. He hates, hates, hates people coming over. He attacked so badly that we ended up having to declaw him even though I am completely against it but nithing helped. He has gotten better and has a new playmate kitty. I moved alone and when anyone comes over he hisses and spits and yet he rubs against them and wants to be in their face. He is a bit scary and I would love for him to stop being so angry and mean because he also is huge! He bites really hard when someone has been in the house for a while. He also bites me whenever I don't pay attention to him even though we just got through playing. When I wake up in the morning he is staring at me twitching his tail then jumps at me an attacks me! I tried crying ouch loudly but he just runs away and comes back. Putting him in time out helps but it's hard to catch him. He is very lovable most of the time! Please help!

I have no idea how to help him not be mean to your company. If I knew I was having company over I might put him in a room with litter box, food and water and let him stay in there until company goes home. Also you could try Bach's Rescue Rememdy (around 10 dollars a bottle) in his water or put a rub a few drops in his eartips(that hard they run when they smell it). Or maybe get a Feliway Comfort Zone plugin (about 40 at Petco). I'm not sure either of these would help. Hopefully others will have better ideas.

Unfortunately declawing a cat may lead to increased biting issues - which may be the problem. Jaime has the right idea about isolation when company is there, plus using the Rescue Remedy and a Comfort Zone plug in. Be sure that you give him plenty of playtime - a feathered cat tease is supposed to help re-direct agression.

Since he is so hard to put into "time out" think about whether or not you can put yourself into "time out" by going into another room and shutting yourself away for a while.

You might talk to the veterinarian about his biting problems and see if s/he can recommend an animal behaviorist. There is also a behavior hot line from Cornell Univesity (and possible one at Tufts) that will work with your vet for a fee to help with the situation.
Good luck!
