Father biting children

hop_skipna_jump Aug 13, 2005 09:44 PM

My friend's [intact] male cat is bitting his kitten's necks and trying to mount them. Is this normal? He thinks he's trying to kill his own children or mate with them but I told him it may be a domination thing, and if had wanted to kill them he would have by now. Is that right? The kittens are obviously too small to be mounted [they're about 3mts old]

But he's afraid to leave them all alone even though they are his kittens. Some help would be nice :D I'm not sure if I'm correct or not so I figured I'd ask here

I would get the father neutered. He actually may be trying to kill them because he wants to mate with the mother cat again.
So keep them seperated until he is fixed.

Yes, I totally agree. Male cats have been known to harm and kill their offspring. It is generally advised to keep males away from kittens. Keep him seperate or their lives are at risk. And yes, neutering would be the best, also for him.

You have been given excellent advice. Male cats instinctively are prone to kill kittens, even their own off-spring. Get him separated from the kittens immediately.

Also, neutering him will help, but it still won't be safe to let him be around kittens for some time. This is because the testosterone stays in the system for up to six months and he'll still exhibit the behaviors of an intact male for quite some time.
