Sibling Love to Rivalry

galacticpie Nov 14, 2005 10:15 AM

I have two adorable cats from the same litter. They were the last 2 left in the liter, and I couldn't seperate them, so I brought them both home. For the first 7 or 8 months of their lives they absolutely loved eachother. They spooned, cleaned eachother, played and generally hung out all the time. Now they are about a year and a half and hate eachother's guts. It started with them becoming more independent of eachother, and now they cannot even be in the same room. Freya (the female) will hiss and raise her hair at Indis (the larger male), who will revel in any chance he gets to sneak up on Freya and pounce. Now poor Indis has a drainage tube in his side from a cat fight which got infected, and is doning a fancy new cat-satellite for his head, and Freya seems to be rejoying that it's her time to rule the house.
What can I do to help stop this terrible rivalry? I make loud noises and make them stop fighting whenever they do inside the house, but outside they just run away from me and fight elsewhere.
PLEASE HELP!!

This sounds a lot like mating behavior. Is the male neutered and the female spayed? Neutered males don't usually go out and get in catfights with other cats. Unneutered male cats get in catfights all of the time.

Both of them were fixed when they were under 4 months old.

Could this be re-directed aggression, or what?

HELP!

This does sound like some sort of mis-placed aggression. One of the cats (probably the male) is feeling challenged by the cats outside and is pouncing on Freya, who has become very wary of him. She probably wants to be the alpha cat.

I'd recommend keeping them both indoors if you can. Then you'll need to separate them and gradually re-introduce them. Using a Comfort Zone with Feliway might help ease things somewhat.

Yelling at them while they are fighting might be making matters worse. Try using a squirt gun filled with water and see if that separates them.

As a final option you might want to talk to the vet about trying some anti-anxiety meds with the cats, or you might want to consult an animal behaviorist.

Good luck!

sounds simular with our 2 litter mates we adopted. they were fine till they reached 1 1/2 to 2 years of age. then they wanted nothing to do with each other. it became worse when jaffa came down sick and had to go to 2 different vets.
when she came home from the vets jazzy would not have anything to do with her. the very sight of jaffa would cause jazzy to go into screaming fits. we had to keep them sepereated for a time and slowly let them work it out. we confined one to a room for a while then the other. we don't let our cats roam the neighborhood. you might try confining each one of your to a different room and just let one out at a time to smell the other under a door. don't let them roam outside.
they are better but jazzy still doesn't like jaffa like they used to as babies. they are going on 4 year of age now. jazzy has taken up residence with daisy. they are the best buddies now. daisy is 11 years old and very mellow.
