Overactive very misbehaved cat

beadster Jun 07, 2006 08:58 PM

I have a torti, she is 17th months old. II found her as a stray back in october. I also have one other cat that is a little over 2 years old that I got from the animal shelter. my Torti is very difficult and very hard to manage. She gets into everything from drawers to cabinets, anything and everything, climbs on top of everything possible, and make every attempt to knock down curtains, and sctratch the living crap out of them. climbs up them and tried to jump on top of the curtain rods themselves... In the mornings, starting around 5am.. if the doors to bedroom are shut, she will scratch the glass planes of the door, till we let her in, as well as scratch underneath the door. If the doors are open, she will jump on the cutrains themselves, and try to knock them down, Just in general out of control and responds to no displine stiuation... She is crazy about jumping on top of doors, and she is crazy about scratching the walls, she will jump to a high spot and sratch the crap out of the wall for a time period... We do trim her nails. She is a very malicious kitty, and its quite obvious she is aware she is going out her way to be mean...

Any advice as to how to get her to mellow out would be appreciated. She was recently spayed back in march, and even before being spayed she was out of control and she is even more out of control after being spayed... Would greayl appreciate any ideas or comments..

Thank you

Phil

Hi,

Your cat is not mean or malicious. She is just being a normal, active young kitty. I don't even want to know the ways you have disciplined this poor cat.

If you don't have the patience to train this very active cat, please find her another home with someone who does. Scratching is one of the many things you are complaining about.......yet have you taken the time to train her to use something acceptable, such as a scratching post? Cats love to climb, they are not "bad" because they do it, they are just being cats. Try providing a tall cat tree instead of getting upset for no reason.

How abvout you not jump to any bizarre conclusions as you are doing. I have two scratching pads in fact, yes she does use it, but it doesn';t change the fact, that she scratches everything else. and just because a cat is active does not mean, this goes for any animal that there should be some control. They can't just run artound and destroy things and knock things down all day long. I care for the cat very much. She was a stray... I don't think its unreasonable to have her a little more controlled, and a little less destroying things, and yes cats can be mean, and tyhis cat is mean...

Possibly you could give her some "quiet time" in a place that she cannot ruin anything. GIve ehr toys and thisngs she can destroy. Direct her to this place when she is in a destructive act.

Also, it is possible that your vet can recommend a medication for a short period of time to calm the cat down so that she can learn to feel calmer. My Bengal is very active and can be very destructive and downright mean sometimes. Amitrypteline (not sure how to spell it) has helped him (and me!) during soem rough periods and I do not keep him on it long term. Usually a week does the trick (usually only a couple of days works).

Scat mats can work to keep her off the counters or where you don't want her to be. I use a couple of them around my Christmas tree every year and now I don't even have to plug it in! THey simply learned to avoid it! Type in Scat Mat into your search engine.
