Sniffing followed by floor defecating

mouser9 Aug 17, 2006 03:01 PM

MY 14yr, old male neutered tabby has been in excellent health, but a bit overweight. lately, he will be sleeping on bed and then will wake up and start intently sniffing around me, bed, then jump to floor, bathroom constently sniffing around. He is unresponsive to his name, sounds or even a flashlight directly in his eye. Then he starts panting and then finds a spot sits down and defecates. After this he is completely back to normal. The stool is normal. I this normal, senile or ill behavior? He has only done this twice in several onths, but this still bugs me. What is going on?

Hi,

Since your cat is a senior, I highly recommend a vet visit and labwork ASAP. It sounds like he has gone blind, and this can be secondary to other issues, such as CRF, Hyperthyroidism, or diabetes. He also needs his blood pressure checked, as high blood pressure can lead to blindness as well.

All of these health problems are treatable, and the sooner treatment is started, the better off your cat will be.

The defecation can be behavioral, or it could be that your baby is trying to tell you that he isn't feeling well. Or, if he is blind, he may have a hard time finding his litterbox.

It's really impossible to tell you what is going on without a vet visit and labwork. Please take your kitty in and let us know how it goes.

Regards,
PHKitkat
