New kitten won't poop in litterbox

lolomo226 Feb 12, 2007 03:23 PM

I have a new female kitten (3 mos) that has decided not to use the litterbox for pooping, she will urinate in it. She used it the first night or two we had her, but since has decided that the rug in the basement is the way to go. I have confined her to the bathroom with her litterbox, bed and food. She either refuses to go, or uses the bath tub. The litter box is clean, I have tried several different litters. She does has a "cold" ,or respitory issue at the moment for which she is on antibiotics for. Could this cause the issue? I hate to lock her in the bathroom while I am at work, and then again at night. I feel so guilty. Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I doing the right things?

Hi There,

This may sound odd for only one kitten, but I would try adding another litterbox, in addition to keeping her confined. Cats can be very picky and sometimes they like to use one box for peeing and another one for pooping. It's worth a try, anyway.

Hi there - I guess I forgot to mention that I have 2 other cats, and 3 other litter boxes, so the kitten has her pick of 4.
I went out and bought Dr. Esley's Cat Attract litter last night which is suppossed to lure the cat like catnip to the box - Not so much! She was not interested at all. I guess I got duped.
I am completely frustrated at this point, I have never had a problem with any other cat I have had like this.

Have you tried two boxes in the bathroom just for her? Not that you want to keep her in your bathroom for her whole life, but just to see what she does.
