Cupboards

Chatanuga Aug 03, 2007 09:14 AM

Yesterday, Chessie discovered that he can open cupboard doors. Granted, it's only in the bathrooms (hasn't done it in the kitchen yet), and he's not going into the cupboards. He just sits in front of the cupboard, paws at the door, pulls it open about three inches and lets it spring back shut with a loud bang. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to secure my cupboard doors in my kitchen and bathrooms? I rent my townhouse so I need to find something that won't violate my lease. The doors don't have a latch or catch on them. The hinges are "sprung" and pull the doors closed.

Actually found the solution yesterday after work. Went to Lowe's and got their child-proof latches for cabinet doors and drawers. Only a couple bucks for a 12-pack.

I was hesitant about using screws on my cabinet doors, but if my landlord says anything, I figure I can just remind her how she never responded to the flea problem I dealt with when I moved here in 2002. The previous tenant had three cats with a major flea problem. At the worst point of it for me, I went in my office for a minute, came out, and there were at least six on my one leg. Raid took care of them. And my landlord never responded to my complaints.

Last night, I put a couple of the latches on my downstairs bathroom cupboards after I saw Chessie going in them for the first time. He hasn't gotten in since.

Well, Chessie had fun while it lasted. My siamese (now at the bridge) could open any cabinet door or closet in my house, she could also close them. If she was scared or angry with me she would go to the bedroom, open a closet, get in and shut it behind herself. She would also open them and let a fursibling out that got stuck in one by accident....IF she wanted to, of course. She lost her priveledges for that when I discovered that she was using my good clothes as a scratching post and I put hooks on all of them.
