My kitten frequently comes up to me or my Grandmother purring and rubbing against us for us to pet her, however when we do she bites or swats at us. When we stop petting her she starts purring and nuzzling again. How do we get her to stop this without smacking her for her behavior?

Hi,

First of all, you NEVER, EVER smack a cat! All it will do is cause the cat to be hand shy. What you have to do is learn to read the cat's body language instead.

When the cat seems to want attention you need to take it easy. Try only petting her a few times, then stop. Watch her ears and tail carefully. If the ears start to go back and/or her tail starts twitching or thumping, stop immediately. This means she is becoming overstimulated. Some cats do not like to be handled much and if this is the case with your baby you will just have to accept it. Chances are that she will at least tolerate some petting, and even enjoy it.

Regards,
