Games people (and their cats) play

PHCurious Jun 26, 2003 12:30 AM

In one of the posts below, someone mentioned playing hide and seek with her cat. Hilarious! This got me thinking, what kind of silly games do we play with our cats? I suspect most of you interact with your cats in "regular" ways, such as waving feather wands around the room for them to chase. Now my question is: What non-traditional games or activities do you and your cats play together?

To start, I'll tattle on my husband. He reads to our cats. Novels. Outloud. Frequently. It's quite amusing as the cats will cuddle next to him and watch his face as he reads them their stories as if they understand every word he's saying and are enthralled with the book.

And what makes you think they don't! Actually, Shorty likes being read to also.

If my cats actually understand what is being read to them, then we have a whole other set of issues. They're just as interested in hearing the tale of the new water heater's warranty as they are the latest crime thriller novel, and they don't seem to mind if a few chapters are skipped.

It's interesting seeing how many cats enjoy being read to. Apparently, it's not that odd after all.

Okay this isn't a game I play with my cats. It's one my toddler does. Al really loves a good game of chase every now and then. But sometimes it ticks the other two cats off. So Al has learned to start a game of chase with "the human kit". Toddler loves the game....it's hilarious listening to hear giggle as her "Aheee Ah" stays just out of reach and then turns around and meows at her before he goes running again. In the end he always let her catch him....the game normally ends with him hopping onto the couch for a look out the window and baby sitting right next to him with her arm over him.
Cali's favorite is playing catch with the balls that come sliding down one of the toddler toys. I put it in at the top and it goes twirling around the track and pops out a side. Cali waits and then bats it around for awhile. When she's ready for more, she bats it over to me and I let it drop again.
Sheridan.....he's my little lump of a cat who would rather curl up than play. I often read to him too.

I love reading about how Katelyn and Al interact. So cute!! You really have to get a picture for us of Katelyn with her arm around her pal Al.

Casey and I play badminton with his ping pong balls. He loves to bat them back to me when I bounce them at him. He is quite good at it too. We also play fetch with his "foxy"...which is nothing mor ethan one of those furry things from a keychain, but he loves it. All I have to say is "Casey, where's your foxy?" and he will go get it in whichever room it is in and bring it back, drop it at my feet, back up and wait until I throw it. Then he'll jump high into the air, catch it with his paws, transfer it to his mouth and then bring it back to me. Munchie loves to play bubbles with me. If the bubble maker makes those small bubbles, she loves to bat at them and pop them as they cascade down. The others are not really all that playful.

Chase and batting balls.

SamM loves me to chase him around the condo. He scurries and gallops around as I growl "I'm goin' get you." He might try to end up behind the headbed of the bed, but if I stop at the foot, he'll pause, then come bounding onto the bed skidding to a stop and laying his neck out for scratches. Either that, or he'll go flying directly onto the bed and get his paws up and ears back in defense as he forgot we are playing a game.

He also will bat a ball at my foot as a signal to play floor ping pong. He has lousy aim and has me all over the floor retrieving the ball.

Captain Video and I play a version of chase. He loves to have me chase him. He scoots sideways and arches up just like a kitten.

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!

Catiya will play "white snake", leaping onto the top platform of the tower and twisting around on her back, leaning over the edge for us to scratch her tummy. Octavia is the playful one, enjoying hide and seek behind doors or around corners. She also loves to play "sheet monster" where she is under the sheet, on her back with all four feet as high as she can get them. Too, she does fantastic "Octy-hops" across the bed when one of us has a hand under the sheet and she pounces on it with a huge leap. Jeopardy likes to chase string but only if no other cat is around to interfere. Katc

Juliet and I play chase and the game of under the covers. She's to be hide under and behind things, for the next human to run from or the next cat to attack.
And than theres the under the covers game, where we make the bed and she runs under covers and attacks us. Lima likes playing that game too!

Lima loves play with tennis balls (both big and small) She fetches them and thans throws it around. Her other favoriate is her feather soft mousies that I help her play with. She jumps on the bed with it, and everytime it calls she jumps down and grabs it and brings it back up onto the bed.

Tucker and I play chase. Except he is the one doing the chasing. I run and hide. Except he has gotten smart and turns around and catches me. Our house is designed so you can go from my bedroom into the bathroom, to the kitchen which leads to the dining room, living room and a door into my bedroom. So we do the loop four of five times. Some times the dog joins in. We have a couple of other games but I'm late for work.
bye
