Is a more cuddly cat possible?

marcilk Feb 15, 2004 07:03 PM

About two months ago I brought home a new kitten. The kitten is about 5 months old now, and I'm still waiting for him to get cuddly. He will lay next to my feet occasionally at night, but is there a way to encourage him to be more cuddly? He's a friendly cat, although occasionally a little too aggressive when he tries to play, and not scared of people at all. So how do I get him on my lap?

Some cats just are not lap cats. I have one that only cuddles at night when no one else is around. If I pick her up during the day she screams to be put down. I have another that loves to sit on my lap. Then others who come and go. It totally depends on the cats personality.

Also, at five months, your new kiddo is still a...well, kiddo Playing is all that is of concern! Don't worry. Kitties usually settle down and become more cuddly as they get past a year or so in age. Of course, as was said before, some kitties just never get cuddly, and others are cuddly from the get go (like my Min).

One good way is to play with your kitty. Tire them OUT! Really work them hard until they just flop in exhaustion.

Then cuddle away! They'll usually be to pooped to protest

The discussion on these boards and in chats is making me think about this lap issue. I've come to the conclusion that too much emphasis is being placed on lap sitting.

I have two super affectionate cats. One likes to cuddle so that he's touching me all the time. If I would follow his wishes and sit still all day, he'd be cuddled against me every minute. But he rarely sits on my lap. Usually he cuddles next to me, and often he puts one or more paws on or under me. I guess I'm a good foot warmer.

My other cat always wants to be ON me, but never on my lap. When I'm sitting, he likes to sit on my feet. He tries to sit on my shoulders, but he doesn't really fit. Hence the long scratch marks down my back as he slips, but that's another story. However, if I'm laying on my stomach, he loves to lay on my back, legs, head, or feet.

Neither cat will select my lap as a spot to cuddle up on. I don't know if this says more about my cats or my lap.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Captain Video can be a real lover-dover, but on his own terms and when he wants to. Surprisingly he seems to prefer my husband's lap to mine! When I'm at the computer, he prefers the keyboard pull-out, so I have to put my keyboard on my lap. What's wrong with this picture!

Yes, your description fits Boris to a tee. He is not a lap cat period. Yet he has to be near me, touching part of me in some way. When he wants to be held, he must be held in my arms so that he can touch my neck. He is quite the snuggle-bunny, but on his terms, and that means no laps.
