Do Some Cats Just Not Like Being Cuddled?

LKitsch Mar 26, 2005 02:51 PM

I have posted regarding this before on another board. About 4 months ago I introduced a new cat into a household with 2 resident ones. It has been a pretty smooth, but not perfect, introduction.

My concern is that she still has not warmed up to me. After being initially compliant, she has become very fussy about being petted or picked up or held, does not like being groomed, and will ocassionally swat, growl or hiss at me when I pet her. She doesn't hide from me, and actually will come out when strangers arrive, but she rarely seeks my lap out, and is not at all cuddly like my other two.

Might she just be a "cold fish" or require more time getting used to me? Her previous owner (she is 6) said she was a sweetheart, but I understand he hardly paid any attention to her and travelled a lot. I spend a lot of time with my cats and like to pay attention to them, so maybe she is not used to that.

Some cats just aren't cuddly and sometimes they just take a long time to get affectionate. It took my cat almost a year to totally become a lover-dover! It may also be that your other cats have somehow communicated that you are their property and so the newbie is taking a paws-off approach.

Don't force the issue. Give her space and she will probably come around in a while.

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!

You have to be patient. And remember that cats are very indepedent. I am sure the kitty loves you. But some are just not the cuddly type. Especially in a new inviroment. I have learned from experience, if I ignore my kitty, he will really try to get my attention. Good Luck.
