cats and biting

I think i read here once that cats will bite if they like you. ??? Or at least are being playful. Is this correct? My cat will bite and scratch even attack from under the couch - but he is always purring and wagging his tail when he does so. My friend thinks the cat is just being mean.

This sounds like play aggression to me, not meanness. The purring is a give-away!
