OLDER CAT IS AFRAID OF NEW CAT

nab219 Aug 17, 2003 07:41 PM

I have a 3yr old female cat (adopted in january 03). I adopted a 10 mos old male kitten yesterday. He is primarily in the den but is very bold and inquisitive on exploring. I have let him out in the other rooms for short periods. My older cat is aware of his presence and is afraid of him. She will not leave my bedroom and stays in a corner. She is friendly when I approach her. Today I had to carry her into the other room where she eats. After eating she ran back to the bedroom. The new cat is in the den at this time. I need suggestions?

It would be best to put the kitten in another room and let the older cat have the run of the house for a while every day. Since they are not fighting I don't think you need to separate them all the time, but the older one does need to be reassured that her house is hers.

Putting the kitten in a carrier and letting the older cat sniff around it is a good idea also.

When you are gone from the house, the kitten should also be separted from the older cat just in case there is a power struggle. Depending on the cats it may take a month or longer to see how they are going to get along. Probably they will be OK pretty quickly.
