New Kitten/s?

coneycritters Aug 23, 2003 02:52 AM

In October we are thinking about adopting another kitten. We are hoping to get one in the 8-10 week range. Annabel will be about 6 months old by then. Do you guys think they will be playmates, as Anna will be much older and bigger by then? We were sort of thinking about adopting 2 in Oct. about the same age. That way those 2 can play with each other, in case Annabel doesn't have the interest for a lttle one. We want Annabel to have a playmate and we want the new kitten to have one too so that we hopefully don't have the same problems we've had with Anna. Can they be this for each other or will the age difference be too vast?-- Jennifer

Jennifer, there really are no guarantees where kittens or cats are concerned. Their individual personalities will delegate how they get along with other and who becomes friends and who doesn't. Generally, at 6 mos of age, you shouldn't have too much of a problem introducing a new kitten or 2 into the mix. I bet Annabell will welcome the chance to play with another kitten. Just do a gradual introduction of the kitten or kittens to Annabell and let them be friends at their own pace. Just remember that our expectations can sometimes lead to disappointment. Cats will always do what they want.

Hi Jennifer,
I won't say that 6 months and 2 months is a big age difference. Gabby is 4 months old or so and Tucker is 2 yrs old and they are best friends. They chase each other all over the house.
Why are you waiting until Oct? WOuldn't it be better to get Anna a playmate now while she is driving you nuts and keeping you awake all night.

Lol, yes Jaime that does seem logical doesn't it? Right now though, we just don't have the time to get to know a new kitten. Our eggs started hatching a couple weeks ago and we are just buried in baby snakes right now that we are trying to get ready to ship out. By the end of October, the seriously busy season for the farm will be over, plus our son will be settled into the new school year and we'll have more time and energy. Also, right now I've got alot of doctors appointments, because I may have cancer and unless I actually do have cancer and need surgery, that should be taken care of by the end of Oct. Well, hubby is really not sure he wants to adopt two kittens at once, because he's actually just now learning about cats and gettng to like them, as he was raised to hate cats and apart from the one I used to have that hated hubby and was horribly vindictive and nasty to him, my husband has really never lived with a cat. He's come to love Annabel, but she still drives him nuts sometimes. He just feels that his relationship with cats in general is kind of fragile right now and he doesn't want to feel overrun all at once because he's afraid he will start to resent them. I figure, hey he's willing to try to be a 'cat person', it's not really fair to overwelm him too soon, lol, there's lots of time for that lol. When we were dating, before we moved in together I had 15 cats and it drove him nuts, I think he ust needs to be broke in slowly lol. Hopefully, the new kitten will get along with Annabel, really well!-- Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
I am also praying for your health.

Wow on all the snakes. I don't think I could deal living with snakes.
Wanted to let you know Gabby met her step sister Tuesday. Moxie is 2 yrs old. They raced and played like crazy. So don't worry about Anna be too old for a playmate at 6 months. I bet they will get along great. If I was you I would probably only adopt one (since hubby is not a big cat person). Are you planning on getting another kitty with a disablity or are you going to adopt one with out disablity?
If you get a hearing one Anna may be able to learn from her.
Anyway good luck.

Hugs and Glows,
Jaime

Thanks, Jaime . I appreciate it. Well, if we have the chance to adopt another special needs kitten, we probably would, so long as it was a good fit, and we felt we could handle whatever her needs were. We are going to be adopting from the shelter this time, because we don't want to take a chance on bringing in any diseases, and the shelter we will be adopting from does all the testing, deworming, flea control and age appropriate vaccinations, whereas with an ad in the paper or something, that probably wouldn't be done. Can't wait for October! I love the snakes, they are really beautiful critters, and alot of ours are quite friendly. We were sad the other day at having to ship out most of a clutch of little pink baby snow cornsnakes.-- We kept 5 though, 4 for future breeding, and one has become our 7 year old's first pet snake.-- Jennifer
