Acquiring a Cat and a kitten -

garyvp Sep 30, 2003 08:03 AM

We have been looking for a new cat (our recently died) and have a dilemma. While we wanted a kitten, there were so many older cats for adoption and we felt that we should do our part and provide a home to one of these cats. We are now contemplating getting an older cat (10 months to several years) that 'plays well with other cats' and a 12 week old kitten. An ideas on this strategy and also on how we might acclimate them?

Hello,
Have you gotten the cat or the kitten yet? I think if it would be find to get a older cat and a kitten. I would probably get the older cat first. Let him get comfortable with your home with out a pesty kitten jumping all over him. Then once he is settled in I would get a kitten. When you get the kitten confine he to one room. Don't let him out to meet the big cat right away. This way they can smell each other threw the door. If you want you can switch them. Let the kitten out and leave the big cat in the room. Others can probably explain this better.
If you go to general chat more people will reply.

Good luck,
Jaime

Here's a thought. Check the Humane society or animal rescue's for strays that are pregant or have recently had kittens. Offer to take the momma, after spaying, and one of her kittens, when weaned. That's a sure way to know they will get along fine!
