A third cat has made my first cat crazy!

hamfiver Dec 08, 2003 12:45 PM

Hi,
I just brought home a third cat (stray male) to live with my other two cats, both female. I was expecting the usual hissing and unwelcoming behavior towards the new cat, but the problem is, my eldest cat (not the friendliest sort to begin with) has now turned against both cats and attacked the younger female quite severely. It's like she sees any cat as a threat, even one she's known for years. I now have them all in separate rooms. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it?

Many thanks.

Your cat is showing displaced aggression toward the kitty she already knows. This happens quite frequently.

You will need to keep all the kitties separated for quite a while. Then you can gradually let the hissy kitty have the run of the house while the other two are closed up - hopefully she will sniff under the door and get used to the scents. Rub all the cats over and over with the same towel to exchange scents.

After a while you can let the "old friend" re-meet the hissy kitty. Then very gradually you can introduce the male. Be sure he is fixed before you do.

You should check out drsfostersmith.com and look at the Comfort Zone plug-ins with Feliway. If you get a couple of those it may help the introductions.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice -- the towel thing worked well. All three can now share the same space (although still hissing, they're not trying to attack each other). I look forward to the day when they're friends.

Thanks for the update. I am glad to hear that your cats are learning to share their space!
