Advice on adding a third kitty

hautlipz Dec 27, 2003 11:53 PM

I really need some advice on whether or not to adopt a third kitty. My husband and I live in a semi-spacious apartment with two one year-old spayed female cats who get along very well. There is an adorable stray kitty (prob. female) that lives in the canyon outside of our apartment and comes by for food everyday. We would very much like to adopt her and bring her into our home (after a thorough vet exam), but are worried that our cats will not accept her and that we would be disrupting the harmony of our home.

Is a third kitty usually a bad idea? Will our other cats consider her a third wheel and shun/attack her?

Please help! Thanks!

This is a hard call. How do the cats react to the sight of the stray? Do they seem aggressive, interested, passive? This would give you a clue.

There is no way to predict what will happen. If you are able to adopt this sweetie, though and she checks out as healthy, I would take her. It may be difficult at first, but usually the cats will adjust - especially if you are patient and willing to take steps to see that things go smoothly. There is lots of advice on these boards and on the internet about introducing a new cat so I'm not going to go into details here about what to do, however if you decide to keep her and run into problems, please come back and post and you'll get lots of help!

Best wishes!
