my first cat seems to hate our new cat

seter16 Jul 27, 2004 09:13 AM

We got our first cat Hazard (neutered male) about a month ago, he is about 3 months old now. Our vet recomended that we get him a companion so we recently (4 days ago) got a new female kitten, about 1 month old. When we let them see eachother she wants to play with him and he just jumps on her and bites her. I thought that maybe he was trying to play but it seems like he is trying to hurt her. I feel so bad for her, she just wants to play. Hazard seems stressed out himself now making weird noises and all. He just doesnt seem to like her. Is this normal, will they become friends???

Your second kitten seems really young at only four weeks. If he is 12 weeks that is kind of big to be playing with her. You might want to always supervise their play until she is bigger.
He will settle in after a while. Some times it takes a couple of weeks for cats/kittens to adjust to one another.

Im sorry I missed informed you, she is just under 2 months (on august 5th she will be 2mo). Thank you for your reply, I really hope they eventually get along!

It would probably be best to separate the two kittens and introduce them gradually. Another way to help them get used to each other is the old towel trick - rub one then the other with a towel to exchange scents.

You might try having an interactive play session using a cat wand toy and let them both have a chance to chase it.

To lessen the first kitten's anxiety, try getting a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway.

Well its been about 3 weeks now and things are going a lot better. Although Hazard (neutered male) keeps chasing Turbo (female) around, they do take turns though, sometimes he does bite her a little too hard and she meows, so then we split them up. Also someone should mention how expensive those felway things are....around $40.00 each!!!! I'm not even sure if it was that little thing that helped or that they just needed time, but things seem to be going much better! Thanks for all the advice!!
