Dangerous Cat/ Playful dog

animal_lover Jul 30, 2004 08:28 AM

My two year old cat, who I've had since she was 5 weeks old, is very mean. I don't know what's happened along the way. But she will not allow anyone to touch her or get near her, unless they don't mind being attacked. I still have scars from when she scracthed me from when she was 3 months! Well, we just got this chihuahua in January, and she is very, very playful. She will stop at nothing to have a little fun. She constantly approaches the cat, not even backing off when the cat hisses or bats at her. Sometimes the dog will even chase the cat, when the cat is surprised. Otherwise its usually the dog who is being chased, for getting to closed. One time, soo after we got the little dog, her eye was almost clawed out. This happened when my cat was outside in a little tent, and the dog kept running aroundd and around it, and then popping in on the cat. When Stella finally got to close, she rescieved a cut on the eye lid, just barely missing her eye. She was bleeding a lot though. My family doesn't know what to do anymore. We have to constantly watch both animals.

You need to keep the animals separated. Since the dog won't learn, and the cat probably won't get used to it, given what you said about her personality. You might go back and read some of the posts in the Introducing new Pet's forum.
I also think you need to take the cat to the vet. They can offer medication to help calm the cat, like anti-anxiety medication. I've heard this helps alot. I don't know the names of any of them, but alot of people around here do, I think I remember one called Buspar? That was only posted yesterday, lol. Anyways, the people here should be able to tell you, and I'm sure your vet will know.
Good luck!

Usually it only takes one encounter with a vicious cat to convince a dog to stay away. However, in your case this doesn't seem to be the case.

Separation, gradual introduction and perhaps some medication may be what is needed here.

Unless the dog is much bigger and NOT friendly toward cats, Destiny is right - keep them seperated! My Benji is a feisty cat at 16 months and there is a wolf/husky 8 month old pup next door who loves to tease HIM> She circles around him yipping, and HE goes AT her! He kind of likes her but will NOT tolorate that kind of behavior and HAS sent her packing more than once!

I have tried keeping the two seperated. But our puppy, a chihuahua, never heeds kitty's warnings. But the problem is starting to fix itself actually. The dog is not getting to close. It's actually funny though. If the cat is walking toward the door to be let in, the dog will run toward her, only to run toward the door. I think she's teasing her. The cat won't do anything, she just looks at the dog like she's a retard. But anyways, the cat is hardly home anymore. She is starting to spend most of her days away, playing at this life-sized playground ship. There is even sand there, and she loves rolling around in it.
