Introducing 2 new dogs to my cat WHILE I move to a new city HELP!!!

Angell207 Aug 10, 2004 02:50 AM

I am moving to a new city about 2 hours from here but I am also adopting my brothers 2 Pekingese dogs, Louie and Lotus. Very sweet good natured tiny dogs. (My brother is moving out of the country which is why this is all happening at the same time) My cat Atticus has not had much experience with dogs in fact he has only seen my landlords husky through the kitchen window.(he didn't seem too concerned with the dog)
I am very worried. I have been thinking about this since things started getting planned. So anyways here is my plan Let me know what you think!!
I was thinking of the cat in one vehicle during the move and the dogs in another and when I arrive at my new apartment I put the cat in the bedroom with litter and food and water and the dogs in the bathroom with food and water until all the stuff is brought in...that way they won't get out by mistake and then introducing them through a baby gate at first...and then letting them get to know each other that way for a little while before attempting to try the face to face intro. What do you guys think? Is this going to work? I want to make this as easy as possible on them... I know with the move it will be stressful enough but when you add introducing them it will be even more so.

Is there anyway that you can postpone adopting the dogs for a few weeks while the cat gets used to the apartment? This would be best.

If you can't, you've got a pretty good plan going. However, the cat probably will need some time just shut in the bedroom with food and the litterbox for several days before you allow her into the rest of the apartment. Otherwise things could be too overwhelming. Don't introduce the dogs even behind a baby gate until she seems comfortable in that one room

Good luck!

Thanks for the input! I wish I could postpone the adoption date but my brother is leaving town a couple weeks before i move so I am imposing on his tenant to watch them for that short time already and he can't watch them past the 1st.

When I do introduce the dogs to Atticus is a baby gate the best way to go? Or should i leash the dogs and just try face to face?

Let your cat be able to smell the dogs under the door to the bedroom at first. Then do a little switch. Let the dogs in the bedroom and the cat out to wonder the new house. After a week or so you may be able to try a baby gate. Also, a feliway plug in my be helpful.

I just wanted to thank you guys for your advice and let you know that things are going really well. I was able to leave Atticus with my old landlord for a week and then bring him to the household. He was skittish at first and I left the dogs with a friend for a few hours while Attie adjusted to his new surroundings. I left him lots of space to run when I did bring the dogs in (one at a time)to introduce them. Now they are getting along quite well! Again thanks for all the advice it really helped!!
