CryBaby Kitty

blueyedtreefrog Aug 30, 2004 01:49 PM

Hello Everyone! I just adopted a kitty this past Friday. She's an exotic shorthair tortoise shell (I think that's right). Anway, she's such a cutie, but she is terribly shy. She has cried the last 3 nights and today before I left for school, she was crying too. She eats fine and goes to the potty without any trouble. She just cries and cries, but she still wont let us touch her. If I sit or lay in the room with her, not too far away, she doesn't cry at all and she rubs on stuff and purrs like crazy. I can get about a foot or two away from her and then she scoots away. Is there anything that I can do for her or should I keep giving her space and let her come to me? Thanks in advance!

Keep giving her space. But try to get her to play with you. A feather on a string works well. Also some nice cat treats (I like Whiska crunchies) will help her come to you.

She's probably still getting used to her new home. Stay in the room with her, but don't talk to her or look at her. Look like you are concentrating on something else instead, like the computer or reading a book. Every now and then toss a treat in her direction, but don't look at her. Do this about 15 minutes a day and she'll be eager for your company in no time.

Also be sure to play with her as Jaime Marie suggested.

I will definitely try that. Thanks for the advice!

You guys are awesome!! I picked up some kitty treats today on my way home from work and I gave her one as soon as I got home then ignored her until just a few minutes ago. I got on the computer and tossed another kitty treat to her and she scarfed it up. I kept ignoring her and I noticed that she inched over a little closer, so I threw her another kitty treat to try to lure her over. It worked hook line and sinker. She's sitting next to me at the moment purring like crazy and begging me to pet her. And she let me!! I can't believe it!!

Thanks so much for the advice!

That's SO nice that she's getting friendly already. You two will be best buds before long. Just remember to give her her space when she seems to need it.
