introducting a third cat

eilcon Dec 15, 2004 12:15 PM

I currently have two female cats, ages 11 and 5. Despite the age difference, they get along well. After becoming involved in a local rescue group, I'm seriously considering adding
a third to the family. There is currently a 7 month old female tortie very much in need of a home. Her personality is similiar to that of my girls, sweet but temperamental. Any suggestions on making this work? Thank you.

Adding a third cat to the mix is a big challenge. The best thing to do is to follow the standard introduction proceedure of isolation and gradual interaction. You can see which of the your current cats is more receptive and work it from that angle - keep the more hostile one out of the picture for a longer period of time.

Watch for some "mis-placed" aggression. Sometimes when a cat smells or sees another "stranger" she will strike out at the nearest moving thing - usually the other cat - in confusion.

Hopefully all will go well - usually cats that have one companion are more open to an addition than "single" cats!
