My cats still aren't getting along

tracyb Dec 20, 2004 08:47 PM

We adopted Nelson 3 weeks ago - he's 12 weeks old. Esther is 6, and we've had her almost 2 years. The first week we kept them separated, but they have been integrated for two weeks now. We still keep them separated at night and while we're at work, but we let them be together while we're around to supervise. I know 2 weeks is really not that long, but Esther continues to hiss and bat (and sometimes still growls) at Nelson. He just wants to be friends with her, and I feel horrible that he's being raised in this unfriendly situation. Is there anything we can do? We use food and kisses as rewards for good behavior, but I eally don't see any progress from Esther. I really want them to be friends. Will the aggressive behavior ever stop, or will some cats just never like each other? It breaks my heart to see them this way. Thanks so much for your help!

Although it may seem like a pain, you might try separating them for about three weeks and then gradually reintroducing them. If you haven't tried a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway, you might want to get that, although they are sort of pricey.

Actually as long as they are not really fighting, the hissing may be a normal reaction and may stop over time. Sometimes cats just need to work things out on their own.
