introducing new cat to two adult himalayans

maluhia429 Jan 03, 2005 10:03 AM

I am boarding my mixed breed, short-haired cat(came from alley cats when she was a kitten, but is a sweet, loving, friendly cat--she was raised with two bog dogs who became her best friends) with a friend for the winter. He has two adult Himalayans, both fixed, one male and one female. He is moving to a new apartment and we were wondering about advice for properly adjusting the three cats to a new environment and to each other. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

All the usual rules would apply here - isolation for quite a while. While the isolation is going on, rotating the cats to different areas of the house and smelling where the other cats have been is also advised.

A Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway can also help smooth things over, however these can be pricey!

One other thing to consider, which is not typically a luxury afforded to those introducing cats, is that the new apartment will be mutually neutral territory. In my experience this leads to something of a "gosh, he must have come with the apartment" attitude from the cats involved. They will still go through and adjustment period, but having a mutally neutral territory should work to your advantage, with any luck. Additionally, since this will be a stressful time for all 3 of the kitties, I side with Madame Alto's suggestion of Feliway. Good luck!
