introducing a dog

dragonpuppy Mar 13, 2005 12:47 PM

i'm going to adopt a dog this summer, more specifically a boxer. last time i brought home a dog it didn't go to smoothly. my cat would bat my dog and he thought she was playing and he would bat at her. she's a nervous cat, always has been. i was hoping you could give me some advice so it might go a little better this time.

They should be introduced gradually - perhaps with sniffing though an open window with a screen in place first. After that you can have a few face to face meetings, but the dog should be kept on a leash during that time. Otherwise the animals need to be kept separated in the house. If the cat seems vicious, then put it in a carrier and let the dog sniff around the cat.

Keep their meetings short and have plenty of high places the cat can jump or climb to. It may take a long time to get them totally used to each other. Do not allow them to be together unsupervised for at least several months.

Be sure the boxer you get has been raised with cats or is known to get along with cats. Dogs who are not used to cats can be dangerous.
