5yo cat and brand new kitten?

CJPJ0202 May 28, 2005 07:27 PM

I've had my 5 year old spayed female cat for almost a year. I found her roaming the streets in my old neighborhood, and eventually found her owner. When the owner tried to reintroduce her to the rest of the pets (2 dogs and 2 other cats), all she did was hiss at them. Eventually she ran away again and found her way back to my apartment. The former owner agreed to let me have her permanently.

Now a friend of mine found an abandonded litter of kittens who appear to be about 4-6 weeks old. I want to take one (a male), but am afraid my cat will not accept the new kitten. This is the first cat I've ever had, so I have no clue how to guess what her behavior will be! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Unfortunately it's impossible to predict a cat's reaction to a newbie, especially given that your cat shows a history of being hostile to newcomers.

If you feel that your potential adoptee will be able to be returned and re-homed then introducing him is well worth a try. You will need to be able to isolate the cats from each other for an extended period of time. You will need a lot of patience. And you will need an "out" in case all does not go well.
