Four Cats One Cat = Trouble?

CatsMeowToo Jul 18, 2005 10:44 PM

Hi There!

I'm new to the Cat Hobbyist boards and site and need help.

I have always owned cats since I was about 5 years old and have loved each and every one of them. I have also been the person who introduces new kittens/cats to the household and apart from the odd hiss, spit and cats "batting the air" at each other, have had no problems. However, I will soon be facing a new situation in which I must introduce my four cats (three girls, one boy) to my significant others' cat. He has been lone kitty in my mans' life since he was a kitten (six years) and now we will be moving in together.

Though his present home is small, we hope to move up to a bigger house within the next two years.

My question is: Do I handle introducing my kids to his just as I have always done or should I do something different? I have always been able to monitor each introduction in the past but am concerned about this.

Hope someone can help

This is a toughie. It seems like you know the ropes about introducing felines to each other. However, from your post I can't tell if you are going to the new cat's territory or if the cat is coming to you. This could make a big difference.

Since there is no way to predict what will happen, your best bet is to try the standard introduction techniques. If you go to "his" place it will be harder because you'll have to aquaint your cats with the new territory. If you keep his cat isolated and bring your cats one at a time to inspect the new place over the period of several weeks this might be better. Take your cat back home after about 15 minutes of sniffing around the new digs and reward it with whatever happens to be the "ultimate" cat treat. It does sound like you have some time so start now and go slowly!

Good luck!

Thanks Madame Alto, tho' unfortunately the crowd will be moving in all at once! (YIKES!!) I'll follow my usual introduction technique and let you all know how it turns out.

Cheers
