new here with a new Ragdoll kitten

luvrdaisy Oct 28, 2005 09:42 PM

Hi, my name is Sheri. I have 4 children and several animals. We have just added a precious ragdoll kitten named Daisy to our family. She was a birthday present to my oldest daughter. I look forward to finding out any other information on ragdolls as although we have done our research , we are new to the breed. I do have one question. I had read that Ragdolls do not extend their claws, but I am not finding that to be true. Is this normal or did we get a one that doesn't fit the standard?
Here is Daisy . She is 10 weeks old .

Oh how very precious Daisy is, to be sure. We do have a Ragdoll board under Cat Breeds that you might want to check out.

My understanding is, that although Ragdolls are very docile, they WILL extend the claws - cats claw for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with fighting - marking territory, exercizing the leg muscles and getting rid of extraneous claw tissue which tends to build up and then crack if not clawed off. Maybe someone who has more experience with Ragdolls can give you more insight. In the meantime, enjoy that precious new addition!

I have a feeling that they mean that adult ragdolls tend not to use claws. All kittens get a little rough with both teeth and claws until they learn what is appropriate play. Also, I'm sure they will scratch on things because all cats do that to work the muscles and keep the claws clean and healthy. She is adorable and I'm sure she'll grow up into a wonderful cat! I have a ragdoll(or)ragamuffin mix and he's a great boy.
