Should I get a new cat or kitten?! HELP!

WallaceDuma May 10, 2007 10:15 AM

Hi,
My fiancee and I have a lovely cat named Wallace. He's a year and a half old and seems to be extremely bored lately. We live in the city in a small one bedroom apartment, and he's strictly an indoor cat. We've been thinking that a good solution would be to get a new cat who could be a companion for him. However, he's really feisty/rambunctious with the two of us sometimes yet scared and shy around other people. He's never been around another cat before, is that a bad thing? If we do decide to get another cat, should we look for a kitten or a cat his age? A male or a female? What should we do?! Help us, cat experts!! We need good advice!

Hi There,

I think that cats do best with at least one other cat in the household. As long as you are prepared for the adjustment period, I think adding another feline to your home is a great idea.

It would be unusual for strange cats to take to each other right from the start, although I have seen it happen here. I have 11 cats, BTW, and they all get along well. The key is to make the introduction slow and gradual. We will be happy to give you some tips if you decide to go ahead and add to your family!

The sex of the new kitty, or the age, is not the most important thing. I would look for a mellow cat or kitten, probably another young adult. Maybe even a cat that come from a multi cat household and has been around others. Most of the cats I bring home came from other multi cat households and I knew they did well there.

Please let us know what you decide!

Regards,
PHKitkat
