For kitties who like to dig, and dig, and dig.....

PHCurious Mar 17, 2003 10:24 PM

Ever have a cat who buries his litterbox treasures as if they were gold? Does your kitty think she's an ancient pyramid builder?

I live with one of those. The only problem with these diligent cats is that in the process of building their pyramids, litter can get thrown out of the box and land everywhere! Some litter boxes come with little plastic pieces that slip under or next to the box to catch flying litter. If you've got a serious digging cat though, these might not catch much.

In my house, we use a plain old doormat under the litterbox. This doesn't keep the litter IN the box, but it keeps it off the carpet. Easier to quickly vacuum too. And now that you can buy doormats in decorative colors and patterns, it's even nicer.

Please share any other suggestions or tips you may have here.

Both of my kitties are that kind...They can stay hours digging their poos. Except that Bob is extremely inefficient at doing it (I have seen Daisy come back after Bob is done and bury HIS poo, LOL)

I actually have 2 rugs: a plastic one (the one use to protect certain areas of the carpet) and over it a regular rug. Every once in a while I obviously shake them off the litter, but I still need to vacuum sometimes I have noticed that the covered litterbox (which I have in my bedroom) lets a lot less litter out. There are other litterboxes designed for the kitty to enter from above...Must be a lot better.

Same thing here, digging and digging and more digging. I don't put anything under the box tho, we have hardwood floors and sweeping it up is easy. One thing I don't understand tho, is they will often try and dig the wall "into" the box to cover things as well. Now I would think, that after trying that a few dozen times, a cat might be smart enough to know it isn't working...but alas, they still do it, maybe they are just trying to be efficient (wish I could teach them to scratch the litter they scatter OUT, back IN!)
BTW, this is what they are really doing in the box...

LOL, I love that little graphic! A couple of mine insist on digging clear to the bottom of the box before the go and then have to make a mountain when they are done. I use covered boxes, so throwing litter out of the box is not much of a problem. I have uncovered boxes in the basement area, just in case one or two of them aren't crazy about the covered box. I solved the problem of litter being kicke doutside the box by buying one of those deep tupperware totes for storage. I cut down one side for easier entry and this has solved the problem. That and I gave my husband basement litterbox duty!

My husband has litterbox duty too. But he seems to think that any litter that lands outside the box is my area. Hmmmf!

I LOVE that graphic. I like to refer to one of my cats as getting back to his Egyptian roots...He thinks he's building the great Pyramid.
