11 year old female Himalayan not using litterbox

PedroEntrada Jun 22, 2003 10:55 PM

When we returned from a vacation this past winter, 2 weeks, our cat had started to use the concrete floor as a litterbaox. It go slightly better but then regressed. We took her to a vet and she had no urinary problems or any health problems. She was put on antianxiety meds.

This did not help at all. She in fact layed down on the tinfoil deterent. We got new litter boxes and clean evry mess with an enzyme cleaner.

She was and still is as inactive as a doorstop. She has never played since she was a kitten. She is also quite deaf. She was also not the smartest cat.

Any help would be appreciated.

About the only thing left to do is to try putting the litterbox right over the concrete floor where she has peed. Also check to be sure she can climb in and out of the litterbox easily.

Has she been checked for kidney failure? Many times older cats start to develop that and it can affect their urinary habits.

One more thing you might want to try is using Feliway where she's been peeing. Also you might want to confine her to a small room with only the litterbox, food, water and bedding and see if that will retrain her to use the box.

Good luck!

We have tried to move litter to the area. She just chooses another spot. We have also tried the confined space to retrain her. She seems to go where she pleases. She has had a urinalysis and it came up fine, no crystals. Anyone else got any ideas or suggestions?

I would try another type of litter and also adding another box or two. I might even put a different litter in each box and let her choose which one she likes best. The only other idea I can think of would be to get one of those tall cat excercise pens and confine her in there for awhile until she uses the box. My sister used a giant dog crate (the ones for great danes and mastiffs)and kept her cat in that until he was retrained to the box.
Good luck.
