Suva pythons

mandrews Feb 08, 2003 02:32 PM

Hi

I've just got hold of some Suva pythons as a resucue case and I was wondering if anyone knows much about them. They were 3 females and 1 male but one has died before we could stabilise them, I'm not sure which one at the moment but if it wasn't the male then I would like to try to breed them at some point. Also are they likely to feed from the hand or do they always have to have the food left out for them.

Thanks

Mike

Hi there,

This species is commonly known as the Sawu or Savu Python, and it's scientific name is Liasis mackloti savuensis.

Especially since you have already lost an animal, I hope you have them in quarantine if you have any other herps at home.

Savu/Sawu pythons have a reputation for being hardy captives that usually will take frozen/thawed or prekilled feeder rodents without problem from a tong or hemostat. My Macklot's pythons (closely related) never miss a meal and are the most voracious animals in my collection.

Here are a few links you can check out for more information and caresheets:

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
