my 6 month-old kitten has recently been pooping in her litterbox, only to kick it out onto the floor. we've had her checked for worms (tests came back negative), and she urinates in the box with no problem. this has been going on for about a week and is very frustrating. while she's always kicked some litter out onto the floor, it's never been this bad. the box gets thoroughly cleaned every few weeks, and the clumps scooped out every day. does anyone have any ideas?

Sometimes kittens can just be rambunctious. She may just have discovered that it is "fun" to kick the poop out the box, so to speak. Or she may just want a squeaky-clean box.

Are you using a covered litterbox? If not, you might try one and see if she still kicks it out.

Other than that I'm not sure what to do.

Are you using an uncovered litterbox? If so, I would suggest getting a covered one and trying that. If she still kicks the poop out the opening of a covered box, you may want to get a deeper one....a 20 gallon plastic tote with a hole cut into the side works very well as a litterbox.

My kitty used to have the same problem. He also used to step in it and that was a huge mess. His problem turnes out to be that his litter box was not big enough. I went to Pet Supermarket and asked if they had any ideas. One of the young stock boys told me his cat used to do the same thing and the problem was solved by getting him a doggy litter box. They are larger and deeper, which allows the kitty more room to do their business and cover it. I did so and we have not had anymore poop on the floor. Just a suggestion. Good Luck!!!!

Perhaps the litter is simply to low to the ground. My cat used to do that when she'd go in, when she was pawing the litter, she send bits of feces flying behing her.

You might want to try a litter with a high siding, or perhaps one with a cover.
