New Kitten will NOT use litterbox!

Erynn Jul 21, 2003 03:12 PM

I just adopted a 10 week old male Siamese kitten. I got him from a breeder and I am using the same litter that the breeder was using. I have only had the kitten for 3 days so far...and I have been keeping him in our (me and my boyfriend's)bedroom. He is doing everything normal (eating, drinking, sleeping, playing) except he is peeing on our bed! The first time he did it I thought he was just scared, so I cleaned it and flipped the mattress. Now he has done it twice more and it is getting more regular. If I put him in the box, he scratches around and then jumps out.

For now my boyfriend has put him and his box and his food in the bathroom. We might have to keep him there until he learns....is this a bad idea? I'm really not sure what to do, and I am getting frusterated because this peeing on the bed happens at 5 or 6am and I have to get up and wash sheets at that time!

Any help would be GREAT. By the way, we have never had any other cats in this house.

The first thing you should do is have a vet check just in case the peeing is caused by a urinary infection. Meanwhile, the kitten should do just fine in the bathroom as long as it's kitten-proof and he gets some socialization with you and your boy friend. Confining a cat to a small area with the litterbox is one of the best ways to train them to the box.

Wash your bedding in Nature's Miracle and see if you can also get some Feliway to spritz on the spot he pees on. This is also a good deterrent.

There is a kind of litter that is supposed to attract cats who have litterbox issues. Check out drsfostersmith.com.

Good luck!

Where is Nature's Miracle sold? Pet stores or grocery stores???? I have never heard of it.

Usually at your local pet store.

I agree that you should have the vet check for a UTI. It also may be behavior. One of my kittens when he was 6 months old peed on my head when I was sleeping because he wanted to play in a box I had put away because he was so noisey with it.
Of course the I wasn't sure which kitten it was they were both orange. So both of them got kicked out of the bedroom at night and locked in the laundry room, along with their sister Quinn (siamese mix).

Have your vet check the kitty for a urinary infection first and if that's not causing his peeing on the bed, confining him to the bathroom is a good idea. Just make sure he can't get into anything in there that could cause him harm. he may just be one of those slow potty trainers.
