MY ADORABLE CAT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

JB9335 Jul 24, 2003 10:09 AM

I have an 8- year old male cat who can't seem to decide where to remove his bowels.
Sometimes he uses the litter box for days at a time, with no
problem and then other days he goes on the floor, in the corner
of my living room (same spot everytime). On average it seems to be an "every other day" occurance..one day in the litter box the next on the floor.
I changed litter and I don't think it is a location problem.
Three years ago he was diagnosed with COlitis so we took him to the Vet and everything was fine (although the doctor put him on Flagyl, which didnt seem to make a difference at all).
He does not have diarrhea (his bowels are normal in size and in solid form.
His behavior is the same, eating & drinking is normal and he urinates in the box.
He has NEVER been a finicky cat...He has many changes and he
never was affected.
There has been no major changes in his or our lives lately
I would appreciate any feedback anyone has to give.
Please!
J

Have the vet recheck him for problems. Since it is a pooping problem, you could confine him to a small room with only the litterbox and the bedding until he does his thing in the box, provided he seems to be regular.

I am suspecting this is a health issue rather than behavioral. So definitely a vet check is in order.

Do you think it is a health problem even though he still uses
the box?..Sometimes he will use the box for several days in
row before going on the floor.
There is a cat next door that comes around our back door (
sliding glass). Could this possibly be the reason?
Thank you for your help

Yes, indeed, the cat who is showing up may be the reason, however, because he has had some intestinal issues you need to check that out first.

Clean any poopy area with Nature's Miracle to get rid of the odor and then spritz a little Feliway (www.Feliway.com) and see if that works. Also try using a Feliway "Comfort Zone" plug-in to help ease any anxiety the cat might have.

Good luck!

Hi J,
Have you thoroughly cleaned the spot where he has had his "accidents" in the corner? You need to really clean it good with Nature's Miracle or some other enzymatic cleaner. Once the area is dry, can you put something there like a table or chair? Or even another litterbox? I realize having a litterbox in the livingroom is not very appealing, but if it's that or pooping on the floor, I would rather have a litterbox there. They have some very nice covers that even look like planters with a litterbox hidden inside.
Good luck.
