Is it an accident or is my cat acting out by peeing on the carpet?

fenrustf Feb 19, 2004 01:21 PM

Hey all,

A little over a month ago I ended up "adopting" two cats when my sister moved to California and dumped them on me. They are both males (Leo and Snake are their names), not neutered (yet), stricly indoor apartment cats (for now).

They've NEVER had a problem with peeing on carpets until my sister left, but within the last few weeks Leo pees on the carpet every now and then. I know cats can be vindictive when they are upset and in this case I suspect that Leo is acting out because he doesn't recieve as much attention anymore - and maybe he is mad that my sister left etc. I clean the litterbox every few days BTW.

So I'm posting this to gather some opinions. What do you people think is going on? Accident or acting out? I've read through some of the posts here and I'm going to try the Felliway stuff.

Oh also they are both about 1 1/2 years old.

I guess if you've been reading the posts, then you also know that the first step is to have the cat examined for a urinary infection!

Neutering the cats will help if the problem is behavioral - in fact you will avoid a lot of trouble if you neuter them ASAP.

Good luck to you!

Oh my goodness, those cats need to be fixed! They should have been neutered before 6 months old in order to avoid any spraying problems. Please take them to the vet and get them neutered ASAP and hopefully the spraying habit won't be so ingrained in them that it can be reversed.

This is exactly what unfixed cats do to mark their territory, both male and female. I've heard that whole male urine smells just horrid and seems to be an odor that's almost impossible to get rid of. After they are fixed then you should work on eliminating the odor so they don't respray there. Try Nature's Miracle which you can get at Petco or Petsmart or about any pet store.

If you can't afford to have them altered, try a Low Cost Spay/ Neuter program which you can find via the following link.
