Calico pees where she pleases! What to do?!

Kikai Feb 28, 2004 09:01 AM

Hi all. I have 3 cats, all spayed/neutered, that are indoor cats. I have had a problem with Callie (our Calico) urinating on things left on the floor. She pees on the bathmat in the bathroom, shopping bags in the kitchen, the kids coats if they leave them on the floor in the livingroom.....This happened before we spayed her, and I thought she was marking her territory while in heat. She was spayed about 4 months ago, and she is STILL urinating everywhere. She uses the litterbox for defecating. What can I do? What takes out the smell of cat urine so she won't just keep using all the spots in the house she's marked? How do you "train" a cat to NOT pee everywhere? She just urinated on 2 pairs of my jeans right in front of me! I'm at my wits end here, and would appreciate ANY help.

I had the same problem with my Skitty. Anything on the floor was fair game! Turns out that she was trying to tell me she had a bladder infection. You shoulda seen the "At least there's ONE intelligent human around!" look she gave me when the vet told me (Skitty is great at guilt-tripping me). We took care of that, and she's been a furry bundle of not-peeing-on-everything joy for seven years. You might wanna get Callie checked out with the vet, if you haven't already. Skitty taught me to always check for health problems before labeling something as "behavorial"...and to use laundry hampers.

Oh, and Nature's Miracle is great for getting rid of kitty-related odors. I think most PetSmart stores carry it.

Ori, thanks for the reply. She's been to the vet recently, and had a full physical, but I doubt they check specifically for bladder infections. I may need to bring her in and mention that specifically.

Vet check is a good idea for UTI. If she doesn't have one. You need to retrain her to use the litter box for peeing. Confine her to a small room with food water and litter box. Once she starts using it with out going outside of it you can expand her living space. Also, some cats don't like to pee in the same box the poo in. So you may want to try having two boxes.
Make sure you clean all the places she has gone with Nature's Miracle.
Good luck,

It sounds as if the problem is behavioral, but you should have the cat examined by a vet just in case it is due to a urinary infection or other problem.

If the problem proves to be behavioral, you will need to take steps to retrain the kitten to the box. Basically you need to confine the kitten to a room like a bathroom, or a large cage with only food, water, bedding and the litterbox. As he begins to use the litterbox consistantly you can expand his space. There is more information at this link:
link.

You need to thoroughly deodorize wherever the cat has been peeing. Nature's Miracle is highly recommended as is Simple Green. It is the smell of the "accidents" that causes a cat to reuse the place.

Check into using Feliway, a spray that mimics the happy scent cats leave when they rub their check against something. You can get it from your vet or from Cat Faeries at http://www.catfaeries.com
If you visit the website, you will see a phone number that you can call and for a fee discuss your cat's problems with someone. The person who does this is very knowlegeable and it may be worth the $$ for you. Feliway is also available in most large pet supply stores. There is also a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway that can help.

Finally, if all else fails, ask you vet about using an antianxiety medication such as Buspar or Prozac. These very often work, however the decision to prescribe them will rest solely with your veterinarian who will be able to monitor the dosage and side effects.

I was 'catsitting' my daughter's 2 cats while she was on vacation (both spayed females) along with my 4. I have 3 litterboxes but I noticed her calico always jumped in the bathroom sink to pee. We noticed a little blood in her urine. I think she was trying to 'show' us. My daughter took her to vet promptly and sure enough, it was a urinary tract infection. He said these were quite common in female cats.
