Cat Scratching but not covering

suemarkh Apr 17, 2004 05:13 PM

I have a new cat and have had her for 4 months. She is now 10-12 months old. Since I have brought her home, she uses the litter box just fine, but she does not cover up her poop. She does not scratch the litter to cover it, but instead she scratches the plastic boc and/or the wall in front of the litter box. this is driving us crazy. Help!

Most of the time there's not a whole lot you can do about cats who don't cover up. This is sort of a marking thing - and cats who want to be the alpha cat leave their poop out for others to "admire". If you don't have a covered litterbox, you might consider getting one and seeing if this helps since she'd have trouble reaching outside the box to scratch.

Our cats do the same thing. We gave up and just scoop right after they go. I tried to teach Gabby to cover it up. Didn't really work. She just found it easy for me to cover it and would leave.

Some cats cover, some don't. At least she uses the litter box.

Trinity doesn't cover her mess either. We have an enclosed litter box and she scratches way up on the sides! I once removed the top and showed her how to scratch... that didn't work! lol! Sometimes Neo will go in after her and cover up. He is such a neat freak!

Hi!
Katie has owned me for 9 years and though she doesn't speak human language, she has taught me some of her language.
She would often scratch around her litterbox for the longest time when I first got her, without covering it up . Finally I learned that whenever
she did that it was about time to change her box. I wash her box
once a week and make sure her "Business" is scooped every day.

When I started doing that, Katie covered it up REAL good. I havent had any trouble with her regarding that since.

Hope this helps.
