apteryxaustralis Apr 26, 2004 06:47 PM

Hi My parents bought a new cat around christmas named tasha. tasha used the litterbox for the first wile she was here but then she stopped. she poops in the dining room and urinates on the cuboards in the room were her box is. my mom wants to get rid of her because she wont use her box and only lets me pet her. my mom wont take her to the vet because she says the cat is old and getting revenge on us for somthing. i would take her by myself but i cant even drive yet, let alon pay for vetrinarian care. DO any of you have any ways to see if tasha is sick so i can convince my patents to take her to the vet? or any other ideas?

Anytime a cat stops using the litter box this is a signal to take the cat to the vet. Very often litter box avoidance is caused by urinary infections or bowel problems. The cat associates the box with pain and decides to use something else.

Even if the problem is behavioral there are things that can be done to stop inappropriate elimination. A good vet cn help you with some behavior modifications and even sometimes medications which can help.

If the cat is old, it is more likely a medical problem that should be checked out ASAP. Maybe you could show your mom this response. Or maybe your mom might be willing to at least call the vet and ask his/her opinion.

Good luck! I am sorry that you and the kitty are going through this.
