Kitty stopped using litter box

evil_kitten May 03, 2004 05:58 PM

I know my problem is probably common but I have to ask anyways, I would rather post this than spend hours looking through posts for an identical situation
Well here is my problem with my kitty, Moogie:
We used to have two cats in the house and for the longest time they shared a litter box with no problems but a few weeks ago we started noticing "accidents" we weren't sure wich cat it was because we never caught any during the act. A week ago I had one of my cats(Diablo)euthanised and we noticed it was Moogie who was having these "accidents" so last saturday I completely disinfected the litter box with javex then rinsed, then used a mild soap, rinsed again and then let soak with only hot water, and started cleaning it twice a day. Now she still only half uses the litter box and when she does she acts like her litter box is the grossest thing ever at first she digs with her back paws still on the edge and when she does her "buisness" she keeps her front paws still on the edge and then hurries out without burying, wich she used to seem to enjoy throwing out all the sand and all. Or she scratches the edges. Oh and I forgot to mention she is a year and two months

Anyways I do not think this is normal and will have her seen to my vet ASAP but I was hoping that in the meantime someone had an idea what was causing this. Thanx in advance.

Well, the vet will probably find something wrong, like parasites or UTI. I've never experienced this as a medical problem, I'm just repeating what I've read and learned through other posts. If it hurts your cat to use the bathroom, they assciate the litter box with the pain and don't want to use it any more. That could be why the litter box seems to be the grossest thing to her, it hurts.
I hope you can get her to the vet quickly!

It does sound medical, however, it could be behavioral. You stated you had your other furbaby put down. Was it due to illness? Possibly your kittie is grieving and was well aware of the sickness in your other one. THey are sensitive to those they bond with. So, rule out UTI or something medical then try using Feliway either spray or the plug in in the area most used by the cat. This will keep your kitty calm and make him/her feel safe again. I'm going through this with one of mine. I lost my first cat after 17 years and now my Bengal is urinating on anything soft. I'm not sure if it is the new kitten or medical, I'm waiting for the test result, but have used Feliway anyway until I know for sure.

Thanks for your responses I will be calling the vet for an appointment tomorrow. I just wanted to know what Feliway is exactly, how it works, and where I could get this product. She has been more agitated since we had our other cat put down and she does demand more attention from us then before. But she seems more happy and playful now so I don't know really if it could be grieving.

I'm thinking that the kitty might actually still smell some of the stuff you cleaned the box with. She could also be associating some pain from a urinary infection with using the box which is why she leaves in a hurry, or even she somehow associates the loss of the other kitty.

Anyhow a vet visit is good to rule out any medical cause. Feliway and Comfort Zome plug-ins with Feliway might also help if she is grieving. Feliway is a synthetic scent that mimics the "happy" smell a cat leaves when s/he rubs his/her cheek against an object. The plug-ins difuse the scent and are useful for calming a stressed cat, while the spray is usually used in a place where a cat has been peeing to "mark" the spot with a happy smell and hopefully stop the behavior. The website for Feliway is www.feliway.com if you want to read more about it!

Let us know what the vet says. I am sorry about your losing the other cat.

Have you cleaned the spots she has urinated on outside the box with a enzyme cleaner? Natural's Miracle works great.

Moogie has started using the litter box again! She hasen't had any "accidents" in over 4 days and isn't disgusted in it anymore she uses it normally again. I still don't know what caused this but as mysteriously as she stopped, she started using it again. I will keep a close watch on her and will be bringing her to the vet if she starts up again. Thanx for all your help.

I'm glad to hear Moggie seems back on track. Keep an eye on her for signs of distress or discomfort and get to a vet if she has further problems!
