Now know it's not UTI-it's Behavioral How Long?

AstiLover May 06, 2004 09:17 AM

I'm adding another litterbox, have been using Feliway 2x a day for about 4 days, am waiting for delivery of the plug in Feliway, have Cat Attract to add to litter from the vet's office (looks like oregano and parsley!) It appears my 6 yrear old Bengal is jealous of the new kitten I brought home on 2/14, although he waited until the last week in April to begin peeing outside the litterbox. He is urinating not spraying (all three of my cats are male and neurtered). They Abby is 15 yrs old, the Bengal is 6 yrs old and the kitten is 4 months old.
Any idea how long it may take to steer the Bengal back to the litterbox?

I don't know but I think I might try confining him to one room for a while. And give him lots of love and extra attention. Hopefully he will retrain quickly.

I just had a thought: Maybe he is mad that you took the kitten on the weekend trip and left him home.

You should take steps to retrain the cat to the box. Basically you need to confine the kitten to a room like a bathroom, or a large cage with only food, water, bedding and the litterbox. As he begins to use the litterbox consistantly you can expand his space. There is more information at this link:
link I would expect it might take up to two weeks.

Finally, if all else fails, ask your vet about using an antianxiety medication such as Buspar or Prozac. These very often work, however the decision to prescribe them will rest solely with your veterinarian who will be able to monitor the dosage and side effects.

It's not the kitten that's urinating, it's my 6 year old bengal who decided last week that he was going to "mark" the spots the kitten likes to be in around the house. I think it's the kitten that's causing the bengal to stress. The bengal was always the dominate one and now the kitten tends to challenge that with his rough-housing. THe bengal has always been the youngest of my cats and when I lost Asti (17 yrs old) Xmas eve, I decided 2/14 to resuce a new kitten. It's jealousy. I've set up another litterbox and sprinkled Cat Attract in it and used Feliway spray in the spots he's marked. I also just got the Feliway plug in. I'm just wondering about how long I can hoep to see a change?

Actually, I took the kitten on the weekend trip because the bengal was urinating around the house (hoping to reduce the stress for a few days) - I thought it would give him a break from the kitten (who has sudeenly become very feisty!)

I can't remember have you had the kitten fixed? Maybe he is starting to smell like a grown up cat and your bengal doesn't like it.

Should I expect the Bengal's behavior to make progress in a month?

PHMadameAlto May 07, 2004 09:55 PM

I would expect to see some progess with the Bengal in a month. But do consider having the vet prescribe some Buspar if the cat is still having litterbox problems after that. The drug can work wonders and can be tapered off after the cat learns to use the box properly.

Thanks to everyone for all your help! The Bengal is a little better after 1 week of all the behavior modification I've provided and the new litterbox. I've taken down the drapes to be cleaned and to have them shortened so they don't hang on the floor, thereby taking away that particular marking spot. I've paid a lot more attention to him (almost ignoring the little one) so I'm crossing my fingers for the next 30 days!
