Tasha and my parents Hurry!!!

apteryxaustralis May 14, 2004 05:13 PM

Tasha my new cat is a rescue cat probably around 6. When we first got her she used her litterbox but then about 2 weeks later she started defecating in the dining room, then about a week later she did not use the box at all. Tasha is urinating with her tail strait up and shaking that sounds like she is spraying but she is neutered and a she. I really don’t know anything about cats except that i love my kitty and she loves me and so I don’t want my parents giving her away. My parents are going to give her away!!! Are there any signs that she has a sickness??

The cat needs a health check ASAP to be sure the problem isn't caused by a urinary infection or something else.

If all is clear on the health front, then the problem is behavioral. You will need to take steps to retrain the cat to the box. Basically you need to confine the kitten to a room like a bathroom, or a large cage with only food, water, bedding and the litterbox. As she begins to use the litterbox consistantly you can expand her space. There is more information at this link:

You need to thoroughly deodorize wherever the cat has been peeing and pooping. Petastic is highly recommended as is Simple Green. It is the smell of the "accidents" that causes a cat to reuse the place.

Check into using Feliway, a spray that mimics the happy scent cats leave when they rub their check against something. You can get it from your vet or from Cat Faeries at http://www.catfaeries.com
If you visit the website, you will see a phone number that you can call and for a fee discuss your cat's problems with someone. The person who does this is very knowlegeable and it may be worth the $$ for you. Feliway is also available in most large pet supply stores. There is also a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway that can help.

Finally, if all else fails, ask you vet about using an antianxiety medication such as Buspar or Prozac. These very often work, however the decision to prescribe them will rest solely with your veterinarian who will be able to monitor the dosage and side effects.

Try to convince your parents to not give your kitty away. If it is not medical, it will take patience and time to retrain your kitty. My cat is going through this same behavioral stage due to jealousy of a rescue kitten I brought home 2 months ago. Once the new kitten was through with neutering and introduced fully, the urinating started with my 6 year old Bengal. I am currently using Feliway spray and the plug in and so far in the last two weeks he has only had 2 accidents and both were in the same place that was easy to clean. I'ts been almost a week since the last accident. I'm sure you love your kitty dearly, so all she needs is a chance and some time and patience. Give her lots of attention and love. Good Luck
