Unfortunate Update on 6 yr old Bengal-jealousy

AstiLover Jun 11, 2004 08:05 AM

Well, I've had him ck'd by the vet on 4/30 for medical-that's not it, used 2 bottles of Feliway, 2 Feliway pligins, Nature's Miracle, taken down the drapes (not back up yet) and he is STILL urinating places. He is jealous of the new kitten I got back on 2/14/04. The new kiteen is smaller than he is, very playful, but not aggressive. The Bengal still seems to think that he needs to urinate on thingss and in places tha the kitten likes. The kitten seems oblivious to this. But I am not and hubby is threatening to get rid of the Bengal if he continues. This morning he urinated on my husband's hand laid marble and I'm afraid if he does this again it will stain the the grout. If I have the vet put him on Buspar will he eventually be able to come off? Will he get better once the kitten is older? (kitten is 6 months old)

Usually cats can come off of Buspar after they "unlearn" the marking behavior by calming down. It is certainly worth a try.

Any suggestions as to what else I can do? I just started the Bengal on a drug similar to Buspar (less side affects and starts with an "A". The vet said 2-3 weeks to see a difference. He resents me giving it to him and he began to urinate on my tennis shoes this morning (he only got a couple drops out before I stopped him). My tennis shoes are where my little kitten likes to play. Should I ignore the kitten and concentrate on paying total attention to the Bengal for a while yet? Should I lock the Bengal up by himself all day while I'm at work for a few weeks? My hubby is getting mad and I'm trying to be patient. I still am using feliway plugin and spray everyday...help!

I would try keeping the Bengal in a small room until the meds kick in. Also, first thing when you get home from work go say hi to the bengal first. Give him some good quality love/play time. Then say hi to the kitten.

Jaimie gave you some good advise - separate the Bengal and give him love in his "space." Keep going with the meds and the Feliway plug-ins! Give it at least a week before you try some further measures.
