Aspen shavings for litter?

AbsoluteRae Jul 20, 2004 02:51 PM

I was wondering if there would be a problem using aspen shavings in the litter box. I use aspen in my snake's cage and I'm curious if the cats would like it. This has also made me think about why cat owners started using clay litter in the first place. Anyone out there know?

There is probably nothing harmful in using Aspen shaving for kitty litter, although they might not work as well. Cats instinctively like sandy soils for their elimination and clay is lighter and more absorbant than sand, but still mimics the texture enough that cats crave. I don't think there was true kitty litter until about 50 years ago - before people really did use sand or let the cats go outside.

Rae, I don't know about the aspen shavings, however here's a link to an interesting article about the first clay kitty litter.

Enjoy!
