Bengal Cat still having urinating issues

AstiLover Sep 02, 2004 11:01 AM

I posted last May regarding my Bengal male cat urinating on my new kittens playthings and bed and marking areas around the house where the kitten liked to play or sleep. I've had very expensive drapes ruined in the process. The first time he did it I took him in to the vet, cked out all OK. I added another littermaid, used Nature's Miracle on everything he was marking, used Feliway plug in and Feliway spray (everyday) for two months. I make sure to give him attention first, he gets fed first. After 45 days he was still marking, so I took him to the vet for the anti-depressant. I only kept him on it for 5 days because he was so lethargic it was awful! I started training for a bodybuilding show so for the last two months I was never home between training and work so none of my three cats got any attention, but the Bengal was fine (?)! Now that my competitions are over (meaning I'm home and giving them love), he's right back at it, and he's marked my shoes right in front of me! (we keep our shoes by the back door and the kitten likes to play there). I've had the kitten since 2/14/04 and it looks like the Bengal is never going to accept kitty. Any suggestions?????

It sounds like the Bengal really has territorial issues involving YOU. When you were not at home he didn't feel like he needed to mark you, but now that you are back in the picture he's trying his best to claim you as his.

This is difficult. I am thinking the next step is an animal behavorist. Ask your vet if s/he can refer you to one.

Best wishes!

and realize that I love them all. He used to do it almost every day and now it's once a week or so. I try not to pay attention to the kitten without first loving the Bengal and then petting them both at the same time. I'll look into the behaviirist or possibly try another type of medication. I refuse to give up!

If the med wasn't Buspar, ask your vet about that. I've read where that is usually the best for urination issues. (The Cat Who Cried for Help - by Nicholas Dodman) You might also want to get a copy of that book - it is very good.

I actually suggested Buspar initially and twice afte rthat. The vet semmed to think I was crazy and that they don't give that to cats. He pretty much nixed the thought of using it an gave me the other medication that he said to split into 1/2 and give in AM & PM or all in AM. Since the pill was so tiny and I could not split it in half I gave it to him all in the AM and he was so lethargic, all he did was sleep which I felt was not right for him. I like the clinic, however, they sometimes seem to think I don't know anything about my pets or how they should be treated. The good news is that the Bengal has been "marking" me with his face this past weekend and he has not done that in a while, he also seemed a bit more relaxed as I spent some time loving him and giving him major atteniton this past weekend. He alaso didn't seem to mind that when I was giving him attention I also petted the kitten. We shall see...

I hope it gets better!! It's hard when they pee on things. It can be so frustrating. Sounds like he is starting to get better with the kitten. Yeah!! Is the kittens name Chopper? You posted a picture of him a while back right?

I'm glad things seem to be going better. I am sorry that your vet doesn't believe in Buspar, but maybe if the problem reoccurs you can look up some articles on the internet and then print them out and see if he/she is willing to reconsider!
