cat went on carpet - how to clean?

mb935 Jan 04, 2005 11:45 AM

My 1 year old cat just peed on the carpet for the first time the other day. I had a punching bag filled with water that leaked which I thought was the yellow stain on the carpet which I tried drying up with a rag. It wasn’t until a few days later that it really started to smell like urine. So Im assuming the cat for whatever reason decided to go there.

My questions are... does this sound like something a cat would do? (water = bathroom). Also, how can I clean it since it did sit there a few days? I used a cheap carpet cleaner and scrubbed the floor. I can still smell it. Are there any great carpet cleaners?

thanks

First you should take your cat to the vet. A lot of times cats that don't usually pee on the floor when they have a urinary tract infection.

For cleaning up you need to buy an enzyme cleaner. Nature's Miracle works well for this. Follow the directions on the bottle. You can buy it at most pet supply stores. I bought mine at Petco.

If you find more spots, the cat needs to go to the vet for a check up ASAP. Urinating outside of the box often means there is a urinary infection present.

Also cats can be attracted to plastic and pee on that as well, so if you leaked water out of the punching bag and it had a plastic smell, this could be a reason.

You want to deodorize wherever the cat has been peeing. Petastic is highly recommended as is Heaven's Own. It is the smell of the "accidents" that causes a cat to reuse the place and you don't want that to happen.

So bottom line here - deodorize the spot and if the kitty doesn't use it again, then there isn't an issue. However if the kitty continues to use the spot, or if he pees on other places then you'll need a vet visit for sure

Good luck!
